Maybe its just me and maybe it’s because I am obsessed with realizing my true potential, but personal growth seems to be the new fad. If you see the trend, then you must have a few personal growth questions.
Growth is more important than you realize. It is a human need you are probably trying to meet daily without realizing it.
Do you read any self-help books? That’s a simple way to know you are working on growth.
What about learning to cook, fix a home appliance or your car, watching DIY videos on YouTube, or whatever hobby you have?
When you do any of these you are feeding your need to grow but what is it really and how do you feed your need for growth?
John C. Maxwell defines growth as our only guarantee that tomorrow is going to be better in his book. I think it’s more than that.
It is part of our human needs to feel fulfilled. Everyone expresses it or looks for it in different ways some are productive and some destructive. Those who are productive learn new hobbies, push their physical or mental limits in sports, adrenaline filled adventures and challenges and those on the opposite side defy moral acts.
But, why is it so important?
Why is it important?
Or they will die…
Our human spirits work in much the same way. How do you feel when you overcome a challenge? When you learn something new?
Take a moment to think about the last struggle you overcame in your life.
Did you feel alive? Did you scream like a Gladiator when it happened? Try it right now. Make your move… Don’t be shy.
Now what happens when you don’t feel accomplish or do not see any progress in it?
Does it feel like a little piece of you begins to die inside?
OK, now think about your newborn baby or you sibling’s new born baby if you haven’t had any kids? How does that make you feel seeing a new life being born? Do you think bringing a new life into this wonderful world is an accomplishment? Absolutely!
It feels like a new you is born along with that new beating heart. Imagine that.. How does THAT feel? Remember that, because you will need to feel that when we ask ourselves how we know if we are growing.
How do you know if you are growing?
We all have the tendency to walk through life without passion or driven by anything. We are simply existing. We assume that life is what it is and then you die. I do not like to sound harsh, but I have actually heard this before, more than once.
We think that we grow automatically as if it was second nature but in reality, we have to be driven to grow and feel fulfilled. We can say this in two ways, live with passion and live with intentionality.
What do I mean? Well, we will not grow personally just by living day by day. Growth does not happen by accident.
Try asking yourself the next few questions and you will have a pretty good idea whether you are doing what it takes to grow or not:
What does my future self look like?
See yourself a year from now, three years from now, ten years from now. What does that look like?
What am I doing to develop myself?
What am I doing to develop others?
The last two questions go hand in hand. You cannot ask one without the other. We must be able to answer both questions with certainty to know we are growing to be our future selves.
If you do not develop yourself there is no way you will be able to develop others because you have nothing to teach others. And, if you do not develop others then you are not really developing yourself because leaders develop other leaders.
Now that you know what personal growth is, why its important and how to know if you are growing then how can we make sure we grow?
Plain and simple. We need to make it happen!
We need to:
· Commit to growing, intentionally.
It takes more than just wanting to grow, it takes will to commit.
· Make it public that we are committed to personal growth.
If we don’t let it be known that we are on a mission for change, we will simply fall back into old habits of complacency. Letting others know will bring some accountability.
· Be honest with ourselves and identify what area of our lives need improvement.
We all like to think there is nothing wrong with us. True change begins with curiosity and being conscious of the need for improvement and knowing what categories of our lives need it.
· Set time aside every day to grow in key areas of your life.
Make time to make small progress every week to improve our categories of improvement whether its spending more time with the kids or working on your finances.
· Document and reflect on what we have learned.
We cannot measure what we do not track. Its like walking in the dark if we do not document where we started, what we learned and our progress.
The ultimate growth is results in contributing beyond ourselves and helping others grow will not only help us grow as leaders but emotionally, as well.
· Never Settle
Never let that hunger to be satisfied.
The final answer
Personal growth is more than just a fad. It is a basic human need and without it we can feel lost or rely on unhealthy alternatives. Start by asking yourself what you are doing to develop yourself and others and if the answer is, I don’t know we need to change our answers.
